Big trucks and small truck. an analogy for Metabolic flexibility

Big trucks and small vans 

🚐

A small town had lots of problem with deliveries. There are lots of warehouses and shops. Which all get deliveries from small vans. Van after van driving all over town delivering from the warehouses. Vans are easy and convenient. 


🚚Meanwhile outside the town there are all these large trucks that can’t get into the town because there are so many vans on the small roads. The trucks are parked in the belly overload parking


🅿️Furthermore the warehouse aren’t equipped with parking for trucks and don’t have large enough shutters for the large trucks. So the trucks just have to wait outside town in belly parking.

🚚🚛🚚🚛🚚🚛🚚🙄

🥸The mayor of the town, has seen other towns work more efficiently so he decides enough is enough and puts a ban on the amount of the vans allowed. This is a great idea however the roads aren’t ready just yet for the large trucks, nether are the warehouses. This means that the deliveries are a bit slower than normal. 

🥸The mayor says ‘trust the process.’ As he knows what will happen. 


🅿️Sure enough over time the warehouses get bigger and sort the parking to allow more and more big trucks in. Soon the build up of trucks outside the town decreases. 

🚚🚛🚚🚛

Over time the town can now handle both vans and trucks. So if a shop needs a quick delivery they can send a van and the truck’s handle the background delivery’s.


🤔The warehouses are your cells the large trucks are fat and vans are carbs. What they deliver is energy. It’s easier for your body to use carbs, because they are easier to get into the cells and are easier to extract energy from. 


 ✅It’s not that easy just to eat less carbs and hope for magic. If your cells aren’t adapted to use fat efficiently. It takes time for the cells to adapt to burning fat. You can do this by eating more fat and eating less carbs. Change is hard.


‘Trust the process’


🤓If there are lots of vans available there is no need for the warehouse to adapt. Same with the body, if too many carbs are available there is no need to restructure. Furthermore, “too many carbs” refers to you as an individual based on your fitness and activity level.


✅ Furthermore, if you have been a ‘sugar’ burner for a long time this takes time. During this time you may get cravings, particularly for carbohydrate rich foods, or even lulls in energy. 


To combat this, 

✅Spreading your protein through the day will drastically help with this. 

✅Moreover, eating more veg will stabilise your blood sugar which will help with energy. 

✅Fasting the right amount for you can help. 

✅MCT oil can help as it’s like a small truck. 

✅When you do have carbs aim to have complex carbs as these release more slowly 

✅ Aim to eat your simple carbohydrates around your exercise window.


The goal in restructuring your town including warehouses and roads is metabolic flexibility, and once you have metabolic flexibility your town will run smoothly. 


Exercise will also help your to achieve metabolic flexibility.

✅You can use high intensity to clear the vans 

✅You can use zone 2 to help restructure the warehouses

✅You can build muscle to make more warehouses.
