The Hungry builders

Always hungry? This Monday’s Metabolic Metaphor may give you some insights.

The Hungarian builders.

👷🏽‍♂️A new foreman was put in charge of a new building site. All the workers are from Hungary and, don’t speak English, the foreman doesn’t speak Hungarian.

👷🏽‍♂️👷🏼‍♂️👷🏻‍♀️The workers are asking for something, and the foreman doesn’t understand.

🌞 It’s hot he thinks and gets the men some drinks. 🥤

10mins later the workmen are asking for something again. With no idea what they want he thinks well it is lunchtime. So he gets them some nice sandwiches for lunch. 🥪

3 pm same again they are asking for something so he gets them some nice cakes and coffee. This goes on like this for weeks.

🥪🍰🥤🥪🍰🥤🥪🍰🥤🥪🍰🥤

👨🏾‍💼Eventually, the big boss comes for an inspection, he’s bilingual, and he talks to the foreman, how’s it going? He asks,  The foreman explains he finds it difficult to talk to the men as he doesn’t know what they are saying.

👨🏾‍💼The big boss tells him he is way behind schedule and goes out to talk to the men to see what’s up.

👷🏼‍♂️👷🏼‍♂️The workers explain to the big boss they can’t do the job as they need materials to build with.

🧱🪵No bricks, no wood. Furthermore, the nice foreman keeps distracting them with cakes.

This is the same in the body, we don’t speak the language of hungry. (see what I did there)

We can get hunger signals not because we are hungry for calories but because we are needing building materials. It sounds like the same signal. “Me hungry” 🤤

🧱 In the body, these building materials are amino acids, which is what protein is broken down to.

We don’t have calorie sensors in our bodies, but we do have sensors for macronutrients. (protein, fat and carbs)

For many a big part of what they need to do is eat enough protein. Neurons in our stomach are searching for amino acids. The signal we hear is hungry, 🤤 hungry, 🤤 feed me, feed me. When the body needs building supplies.

Although protein can be used as energy its main job is growth and repair. Which is happening daily. In the body we have protein breakdown and protein synthesis.

🧱 Imagine a brick wall, that’s decaying at a rapid rate. So the builders remove decaying bricks, but if not enough new materials are coming in, The builders will try to salvage as much damaged brick as they can, but they will still need new materials or the wall will just get smaller and smaller.

This is called protein turnover, we must take in more protein than we lose. Moreover the speed of decay in the wall increases the older you get.

🤤If you’re constantly hungry or craving junk meeting your program team targets can really help.

👷🏾‍♂️If you are hearing your internal workmen in your body and. It sure what they are saying, check and see how much protein you have had so far. If it’s low this could why you are hungry. Especially in the days after a workout.

📝 The simple fix is to take your daily Lumen protein goal, which doesn’t change and split it into 3, then Aim to have 3 servings per day.

🙂My simple rule is not to eat less than 40g in a meal and have a few go to options. You need a minimum of 25g to trigger muscle protein synthesis. Don’t worry to much about overeating protein, from whole foods. It’s difficult to break down, if for example you did eat 70g of protein from meat in one go doesn’t mean it’s absorbed in one go. It is broken down over several hours and drip-fed into the system. However Whey protein is different as it’s quickly absorbed so 25-40g in one go is enough.
