The sub- deep deficits

This weeks Metabolic metaphor Monday! Is about a submarine 🌊


💰 Two millionaires decided to have a race, one in a row boat and the other owns a submarine. They plan to race to fat loss island.🏝️


👏🏼 3,2,1 and go. 


🚣🏽The row boat slowly moves forward making steady progress. The submarine dives and makes some rapid progress. “Deeper” shouts the submarine owner. “The deeper we go the faster we go!” 🌊


🚨A little while later the alert light comes on. And the captain 👨‍✈️ decides it best to resurface

For the safety of the crew and the owner. To check the status, of the submarine.


🚣🏽While on the surface, the rowboat overtakes them. “Not to worry.” says the owner. “Once we are ready we will easily catch him.” It’s not long before the sub takes off again and sure enough, looking through the periscope, the owner can see they’ve passed the row boat. 

🏝️ They see fat loss island just ahead. 

“Dive, dive and Full steam ahead!!” Shouts the owner. Just then alert 🚨 again. 


💥” We lost power” shouts the captain. 

 The captain presses the emergency button to resurface the vessel, again!


🏝️Looking out of the hatch, the owner can see fat loss island getting smaller as the tide is frustratingly pulling them back out to sea. 🌊

🚣🏽 The row boat slowly passes them again heading straight to fat loss island. 🏝️


🧐It’s a lot like dieting. We think reducing calories and diving deeper into our deficit is the right answer. So we sink our calories into the depths, but our submarine can only handle so much pressure. 🐙

Just like the sub we can make great progress, until the captain pushes the emergency surface button. Within our bodies we have a Captain, this is the general governor of our metabolism.


 ⚠️Make no mistake we can make decisions but we are not in charge, The captain is. 👨‍✈️ 


👨‍✈️ The captain’s job isn’t our goal. Its job is your survival. If we choose to do stupid things that could jeopardise survival, like diving deep into a deficit, it will push the emergency stop button. 


🚨We may say “our metabolism has crashed. “ Or we are in “starvation mode.” It’s not really what has happened rather what’s called metabolic adaptation, which is a slowing of unconscious movements. Known as (NEAT) nonexercise activity, thermogenesis. This can drop our total daily energy expenditure by 100s & 100s of calories. 


🚨Other things can manifest as well as a lack of movement, like ravenous hunger, or being peckish*. 

This can increase what we eat by 100s of calories. Most of these metabolic adaptions, will be difficult to detect, and it will turn what was once a large deficit into a small deficit or even a surplus. It’s frustrating! It will feel like the tide is pulling you out to sea. 🌊 


-Peckish* peckish in British English

(ˈpɛkɪʃ ) adjective. informal, mainly British. feeling slightly hungry; having an appetite.

I describe peckish as you are not hungry but you are not full. In this state, you are more likely to graze and pick at food. This can be unconscious but can add up calorie-wise.


So what happened at the end of the story? 

🚣🏽The rower, not only got to fat loss island but got super fit in the process this is called a re-comp, this is where you have a small deficit and keep active. The submarine, It has been lost out at sea for the last two year, still trying to get to fat loss island. 


The question is which would you rather be?
