Why I’m all in on metabolic flexibility.
Metabolic flexibility is important because it allows the body to adapt to different situations, such as fasting or eating a high-carbohydrate diet. Metabolic flexibility is also important for maintaining a healthy weight, because it allows the body to switch between burning carbohydrates and burning fat for energy.
🦹♂️This isn’t a super power, this is just how the body should work. Millions of years of evolution have gifted us with metabolic flexibility. In one generations we have swapped it for Uber eats and Netflix. The last generation swapped it for colour TV, and drive thru fast food, the generation before for radio and supermarkets.
📺🥡
Here is how to lose metabolic flexibility, step one eat pasted your, carb tolerance, remember the human body processes carbs first. But it’s not just carbs to blame….
🤔 They say obesity, epidemic it’s unclear what caused it. Yet energy consumption has gone up by 10 fold in the last 50 years. Do we have any 5 year olds to help solve this mystery?
👩🔬fat +carbs= calories =energy
Overconsumption of energy, is down to foods that are hyper palatable these foods tend to be high carb & high fat, with zero nutritional value moreover, no protein or fibre. More than 95% of the supermarket are filled with these foods. Yet we still don’t know what’s causing the obesity epidermic??
The problem is TOO much energy going through the system daily, In my calorie deficit bucket analogy.
The bucket represents your total daily energy expenditure, Carbohydrates are like the water in a bucket and fat is like the oil, the water sinks to the bottom and the oil floats. What is on the bottom of the bucket gets used/burned in the metabolism.
What happens when we put too much total energy into the metabolism? Imagine Both oil and water are being poured into the bucket in equal amounts, but MORE than the bucket can hold.
🛢️🪣💧
So what happens is there is only ever water at the bottom of the bucket and oil is pouring over the top. This stores as fat. What else this means in our biology, is the metabolism predominantly burns carbs and then down regulates systems involved in
burning fat.
In simple terms it forgets how to burn fat, this is one part in losing metabolic flexibility. Furthermore, in this state your metabolism is only ever dealing with carbohydrates. Your pancreas pumps out insulin too much insulin starts destroying the insulin receptors on cells. Like an overused rusty lock. This becomes insulin resistance.
Moreover, the oil spilling over the top of the bucket is excess fat this stores as body fat.
📰NEWSFLASH you do not need insulin to store body fat. Dietary fat when broken down into fatty acids, get a free vip pass into any fat cell, if they are not needed to fuel the metabolism. They patiently wait in your fat cell to be used as energy, however, every time the fat cell door opens, it’s not to let fat out it’s to let more fat in.
(stop over filling the bucket) 🛑 ⛽️🪣
Another problem can happen after an over correction… going keto… without fully understanding Metabolic flexibility. This is where you add nothing but fat into the bucket, then a similar problem happens the body forgets how to burn carbs. Or in fancy terms down regulates enzymatic processes in metabolising carbohydrates. 🤓
🎂🍰Guess what happens now when you have a slice of birthday cake after 6 months of strict keto, your body can’t clear the carbs and you get a huge blood sugar spike, your pancreas pumps out insulin to try and lower your blood sugar however, now you have insulin resistance, not because of too much insulin, but because the cell receptors are not as abundant as before. Did you know there are different types of insulin resistance? And different causes, including stress. (Post on stress coming soon)
The human body is duel fuel machine, if your body isn’t working as it should. There is a huge range of where you may sit on the metabolic spectrum. The good news is the metabolism is adaptive and reactive. Here are a few things you can do to make your metabolism work for you.
✅Check list
💪🏽Do you have enough lean mass? Strength is a good indicator for this.
🚴♀️Are you efficient at zone 2 this is away to test how good you are at burning fat.
🧁How many carbs can you tolerate?
😵💫Can you digest the macronutrients efficiently?
😴Is your sleep good? If not why not?
😰How do you handle stress?
🪣 Have you stopped over filling the bucket?
🌞 Are you in sync with your environment/circadian rhythm?
